Jack’s Basket is a nonprofit that supports and educates families and medical staff on best practices for delivering a Ds diagnosis.

When I began speaking to Lisa Nevin, a close friend and local ambassador for Jack’s Basket, about World Down Syndrome Awareness Day on March 21, I thought of it as a “Giving Back” segment.

Jack’s Basket is a nonprofit that supports and educates families and medical staff on best practices for delivering a Ds diagnosis. But I quickly realized this interview belongs in “Parenting”. As parents, we become keenly aware of differences in the way every person learns and grows. We also understand what it is like to receive and give unexpected news.
Lisa and her husband Joey are local leaders in the community who have opened my eyes to the differences that should be celebrated in children with all genetic make-ups.  I hope you enjoy this interview. I’m so proud to know this courageous and inspiring mother!!

On March 21, you can join in the celebration of World Down Syndrome Awareness Day by doing the following:

Random acts of kindness: on WDSD many families celebrate by completing random acts of kindness as a way to raise awareness of the special day.
  • Hand out gift cards with notes about WDSD
  • Provide coffee or snacks for nurses at a local hospital
  • Make a meal to deliver to local police or firefighters
  • Send a special thank you to the teachers at your child’s school

Take the Generation G Pledge: to always be accepting, be kind, and be generous!
  • I accept you as you are
  • I choose to be better every day
  • I will fight for you and have your back
  • I will be generous with my time and my heart
  • I will be heroic and speak up if someone needs help
  • I will invite 21 people to join Generation G
  • I will make Generation G a part of my life
  • Write a “G” inside a heart on the palm of your hand to show the world your pledge. Encourage friends, family, coworkers, and students at your child’s school to also take the pledge

Rock your Socks! Encourage friends, family, classmates, and coworkers to rock their silliest and most
